Students walk down uneven and dangerous sidewalks everyday on their way to school.

The Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation came up with a plan to make them safer to travel on.

"We talked with parents, we surveyed kids, we analyzed data about where kids were walking to school," said Jack Daugherty Neighbordhood Stabilization Director for the YNDC. "And we put together a prioritized set of reccomendations for what needed to be done to improve safety around the schools," he said.

At schools like Taft Elementary, Daughtery says some of the sidewalks were so broken up, they were virtually - unwalkable.

"A lot of times kids are tripping, falling or walking in the street with cars because they can't safely cross or walk along the sidewalks," said Daugherty.

30 percent of students from Taft Elementary School walk home. Little changes to the sidewalks will impact not only them, but the rest of the community too.

"In general, like improves the quality of life in the neighborhood because it makes it a lot safer for the students," said Basia Adamczak, 7th Ward Councilwoman in Youngstown. "As well as just all the residents in general to be able to you know, now, walk on the sidewalks," she said.

Other local schools that will have sidewalks in their area repaired, include Harding Elementary, Paul C. Bunn, Martin Luther King and Valley Christian.
