Southington teacher, coach, arrested for sexual battery
A veteran Southington Local Schools teacher and coach has been arrested on sex-related charges.
Craig Lefkowitz, 51, was booked into the Trumbull County Jail on Tuesday as he awaits a hearing in Newton Falls Municipal Court on two counts of sexual battery, which is a felony.
Trumbull County Sheriff Paul Monroe told 21 News that they received a complaint about inappropriate sexual activity with a 15-year-old student from 15 years ago.
He said that this occurred during the course of the victim's 9th grade through senior year at the district.
Lefkowitz, who has been licensed to teach since 1996, has been employed by the Southington Local Schools for 21 years.
According to his school web page, Lefkowitz is the Athletic Director, computer teacher, Junior High Volleyball coach and Spirit Club Advisor.
The web page also states that Lefkowitz is in charge of school trips to Germany and Italy planned for June.
21 News contacted school officials on Wednesday to learn the current status of Lefkowitz and we are awaiting a reply.
Sheriff Monroe said that if there are any other alleged victims out there, they should contact the sheriff's department.
"Typically, when we have an offender out there, we don't catch them the first time they commit a crime," Monroe said to 21 News. "We usually catch them down the road and there are more crimes committed. I'm not saying that Mr. Lefkowitz has done anything other than what we have accused him of but in my mind, I believe the potential is there and we're going to look a little bit deeper."
Lefkowitz is expected to be arraigned Thursday in court.
