An investigation continues looking into the Utopia nightclub shooting that left one dead and two injured, early Saturday morning.

Twenty-seven-year-old Charles Allen was found in the entryway of the nightclub and later pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Police Chief Carl Davis tells 21 News detectives are still trying to piece together what happened.

"The detectives are working under the theory that the homicide victim was the intended target of the shooting," said Davis.

Originally, police were thinking this was an active shooter situation as several shots rang out when they arrived on the scene.

They cleared the bar in an attempt to locate the person firing the weapon, but to no avail.

Youngstown Police Captain Rod Foley says they're looking for potential bad blood between the victim and other people, but nothing has yet been confirmed.

Chief Davis says this was not a hate crime.

"This case was not LGBT related. There's no evidence suggesting that this was a hate crime," said Davis.

One victim remains in the hospital after being shot in the leg. An officer noticed she was bleeding profusely and stepped in to apply a tourniquet.

Utopia released a statement Monday evening on its Facebook page saying in part:

"While we have wanted to issue a statement sooner, our ongoing cooperation with law enforcement and city officials has taken precedence"

"Our venue was privately retained for a live concert event, and it appears that one of the performers was the target."

"Since its opening in 2005 Utopia has prided itself by operating a safe and well-protected venue for all our guests. We will continue to ensure that that practice is followed and this tragic incident does not lessen your safety."
