A major drug bust in Trumbull County led to confiscation of  chemicals that could lead to the production of a significant amount of a drug new and rare to streets in this region.

The substance was so new to law enforcement here, research was needed to find out how to handle the lab and chemicals so no one was injured, no fires or explosions took place.

In Warren, Dunstan street was taped off.  A tip led the Trumbull County TAG Drug Task Force to an apartment complex.

The commander of that task force tells us they found a drug lab possibly making DMT.

Dimethyltryptamine is a hallucinogenic drug people can smoke or inject and it's new to streets in our region.

Captain Tony Villanueva, Commander of the Trumbull County Sheriff's Office TAG Drug Task Force, said, "There are flammable chemicals. There's chemicals that can have some reactions, explosions as well, so we had assistance by the Warren Fire Department and the Trumbull County HazMat team."

Neighbors nearby were upset the safety of their families could have been in jeopardy.  They say it's bad enough with the drugs already on the streets.

Drums of chemicals were removed from the apartment by the Hazardous Materials team wearing special suits.

"This is pretty big speaking with some of the DEA Agents. There's a lot of chemicals. We don't know how much finished product there is at this point," said Villanueva.

According to the DEA website DMT use can cause various health effects such as increased blood pressure, lead to a coma, or death through a lack of breating.

One man was detained and questioned, but no criminal charges are expected until tests come back from the state BCI crime lab.
