The Butler Institute of American Art has a painting back home after sharing it with exhibitions across the country.

The Youngstown museum announced its Winslow Homer painting, "Snap the Whip," has returned home after its voyage across the U.S. to Colorado, Maine and Texas as part of an exhibition called "Natural Forces: Winslow Homer and Frederic Remington."

As part of the exhibit, "Snap the Whip" is also included in a 225-page exhibition catalog published in collaboration with Yale Publishing. It's available in the shop at the Denver Art Museum and online.

The Butler Institute's founder, Joseph G. Butler Jr., purchased the painting in 1919. Butler officials say the post-Civil War work of "Snap the Whip" harkens to a wistful yearning for the simpler days of rural, agricultural life as symbolized by the little red schoolhouse.

Butler officials say the painting has since been reinstalled in the Cushwa Gallery.
