Suspect accused of using stolen credit cards to buy $5,900 in gift cards in Boardman
A 26-year-old Argentian man was arrested in Boardman and charged with misuse of a credit card, identity theft, receiving stolen property, and tampering with evidence after purchasing $1,900 worth of iTunes cards from the Boardman Walmart.
According to the police report, the suspect, Angelo Castro Castro, was charged for using someone else's credit to purchase the iTunes cards from the store.
The police were notified by Walmart Loss Prevention employee of a suspicious male that was purchasing thousands of dollars of gift cards.
According to the police report, Castro was seen leaving the parking lot and met with another male near Youngstown Skate.
The police officer pulled in behind the suspect asked for identification from both men, both with backpacks.
Castro and the other male, who provided a Buenos Aires ID, were ordered to take their hands from their pockets, and in doing so, Castro reportedly handed an item to the other male. According to the officer, Castro then shouted something three times, perhaps in Spanish, and the man identified as Victor Lopez in turn began running towards Tiffany Blvd.
The officer noticed Castro had a cell phone in his hand and ordered him to turn over the phone, and a struggle pursued. The officer said it appeared that Castro was attempting to break the cellular device.
Castro was arrested and the officer reportedly found $1,900 worth of iTunes cards and $4,000 worth Visa gift cards, along with four Walmart receipts. The credit card used to make the purchases were not found on Castro.
A Canfield woman reported that her wallet containing credit cards had been stolen and had received fraudulent charges after she had been shopping at the Giant Eagle location near Walmart.
Castro refused to provide information on Lopez, and claimed to have met Lopez in Tennessee and was traveling by Uber from state-to-state.
Castro was ordered held with no bond until his court appearance for his preliminary hearing on March 16 at 9:30 a.m. in Judge Joseph Houser's Boardman court.
The police are seeking information on Lopez, described as a 5'8" male, approximately 200 lbs. and appeared to be in his late 40s.
