1996: The Youngstown State University women's basketball team beat the University of Buffalo at Buffalo, 53-43, to win the Mid-Continent Conference championship. Sophomore Shannon Beach was the tournament's MVP.
Two men found shot to death at 123 New York Ave. on the North Side are Youngstown's 15th and 16th homicides of the year. Dead are Pedro Rodrigues, 42, and Adalberto Gonzalez, 26.
The Youngstown Area Urban League, organized in 1966, has gained a reputation over three decades as a fighter for social justice. It has had five executive directors: Clifford E. Gates, Clarence E. Barnes, George E. Mims, Stephen Pressley, and Atty. W. Ronald Miller.
1981: William H. Cossler, president of YBM Corp., is named chairman of the Youngstown Private Industry Council.
Mahoning County Common Pleas Judge Clyde Osborne sentences to jail five of 37 Youngstown public school teachers charged with contempt for violating his order that they not restrict people from entering or leaving school buildings. They were Joan Melnick, John Senzarin, Joseph Sepecy, William Oliver and Barry Rose.
Youngstown Mayor George Vukovich announces that he will seek re-election.
1971: In a special election, Warren voters rejected a proposed increase in the city's income tax from 1 percent to 1.5 percent by a 3-to-1 margin.
Youngstown City Council adopts an ordinance making parents liable for fines if their children under 18 commit acts of vandalism.
An interfaith chapel is dedicated in the Eastwood mall during an ecumenical service.
1946: Monday Musical Club celebrates its 50th anniversary with a luncheon at the Women's City Club.
A group of five boys, ages 11 to 14, are arrested by Youngstown police and admit to stealing 48 pigeons and an undetermined number of pigeon eggs from coops throughout the city. The birds were recovered, but their leg bands had been removed, making it difficult to return them to their owners.
The first season of professional basketball in Youngstown is nearing an end. The Bears drew 60,000 fans to 17 home games.
