The American Legion Post 177 in Canfield recognized members of local law enforcement and emergency services for their efforts in supporting the Greater Canfield Community during the coronavirus pandemic.

Those honored tonight include Officer Brett Modic from the Canfield Police Department, Deputy's Tom Stevens, Lucas Ring and Jon Persing from the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office, Officer Dan Deluca with the Ohio State Highway Patrol and the entire Canfield Joint Fire District.

"I'm not a safety force member myself or first responder, but it's just something that I respect what they do," said Mike Kubitza, American Legion Post 177 Post Commander. "You know they put their lives out every day and every time they go out in a vehicle, you never know what's going to happen."

Canfield Police Officer Brett Modic was awarded in part for, "exemplifying a devotion to duty in the patrol division through his hard work and proactive efforts." The Post honored Modic for his work ethic, sincere enthusiasm and unwavering commitment to the department and community.

Deputy's Tom Stevens, Lucas Ring and Jon Persing from the Mahoning County Sheriff's Office were awarded primarily for their actions in a call to a suicide threat that ended safely because of the deputy's work.

Trooper Dan DeLuca with the Ohio State Highway Patrol was awarded Tuesday because of his nomination for the Canfield Post Trooper of the Year for 2020 and for his distracted driving enforcement efforts. "Trooper DeLuca cares about the citizens of Ohio and is always working his hardest to keep them safe," the award read.

The Fire Chief from the Canfield Joint Fire District could not choose a specific staff member for the award, so he nominated all of the department's full time and part time employees. "CJFD transported 194 COVID-19 patients in 2020, which accounted for 21% of all transports," the award read.

Those honored received a Certificate of Commendation and an American Legion pin. A small gesture to give a big thank you for their continued service

"Anytime you can be recognized just for doing your job is always humbling. During 2020 with COVID-19, we didn't use that as an excuse," said Dan DeLuca, Trooper with Ohio State Highway Patrol.

"Most of us are retired and done with active duty," said Richard Duffett, Mayor of Canfield and American Legion Post 177 Chaplain. "We want to honor those that are still serving our country in the city in which we live."
