Some in the Valley may temporarily have service cut off as Columbia Gas replaces existing gas lines with plastic pipe.

Columbia Gas announced Monday that it will begin replacing gas lines with new plastic pipes in Damascus/Butler Township, beginning as early as February.

The majority of work will be done on Valley Road, with work will also set to take place on U.S. 62 (Salem-Alliance Road).

The company did confirm the project will shortly interrupt service for some in the area.

Customers affected by outages will be notified prior to service being shut off.

Columbia said crews will be replacing aging gas lines with 2,700 feet of plastic pipe, which offers safety features and can better adapt to shifting temperatures.

Once installed, the modernized system will last longer and reduce the amount of future maintenance required for upkeep.

There is no additional cost to customers for this project.

This work is part of Columbia’s 25-year, $2 billion plan to improve the safety and reliability of more than 20,000 miles of underground natural gas pipe.

Residents can attend a virtual public meeting on Monday, February 8th at 5:30 p.m. for anyone with questions.

The project is expected to be completed by spring.
