A busy stretch of Interstate 680 and Mahoning Avenue remained closed in Youngstown on Wednesday following a traffic accident that damaged a bridge support.

Appearing on WFMJ Today Wednesday morning, Ray Marsh from the Ohio Department of Transportation said that crews would be working to shore-up supports under the Mahoning Avenue overpass that were damaged Monday in a collision involving a car and a truck.

Since then, I-680 and Mahoning Avenue in the area have been shut down.

Marsh says ODOT’s immediate plans are to make repairs and reopen at least one lane of I-680 in each direction as soon as possible.

There is no timetable to reopen the Mahoning Avenue Bridge above I-680, according to Marsh.

According to the latest available traffic counts, more than 48,000 cars and trucks pass through that section of I-680 every day.

An average of 9,100 vehicles use the Mahoning Avenue bridge daily.
