Salem Regional Medical Center has received its first shipment of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine.

The hospital system made the announcement Tuesday. The first shipment was delivered to Columbiana County's three health departments. It was then given to Salem Regional Medical Center to begin vaccinating their frontline workforce as recommended in Ohio's vaccination plan.

Hospital officials say that because the initial supply of the vaccine is limited, the first phase of vaccines has been prioritized. The Ohio Department of Health has prioritized vaccinations for essential healthcare providers routinely involved with the care of COVID-19 patients, residents and staff of congregate care settings and EMS providers, according to the hospital.

Salem Regional plans on officially launching its vaccination effort for staff and physicians on Dec. 23. The hospital says they will provide a series of vaccine clinics for staff and physicians by appointment throughout December.
