1995: The Cleveland Browns play their last home game in Cleveland Stadium before moving to Baltimore, beating the Cincinnati Bengals 26-10 before 64,193 fans.
Photographs recording the old-fashioned methods of this area's Amish farmers by Youngstown photographer Michael Lacivita are on postcards and refrigerator magnets being sold in tourist spots in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Time Magazine names Republican House Speaker Newt Gingrich it Man of the Year.
1980: An early morning, two-alarm fire destroys the Sweet Shoppe, 15 N. Mill St., New Castle, spreading acrid smoke through nine other downtown businesses.
Shirley Bankhead, 33, helped two of her children to safety but was overcome by smoke and died trying to save a third child, Erin, 3, from a fire at their home at 1610 Volney Road.
A brain stem audiometer is installed by the Youngstown Hospital Association at Tod Babies and Children's Hospital, which will be used to test infants suspected of hearing loss or a risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.
1970: State Sen. Harry Meshel, D-Youngstown, chairman of the Citizens Committee for a Medical School at Youngstown State University, tells the Ohio Board of Regents that four new medical schools in Youngstown, Akron, Dayton and Athens would best serve the state.
Two men and a woman have been arrested in the beating death of a well-known Youngstown musician, Jack Hall.
The Rev. Michael Cariglio, son of Mr. and Mrs. Michael Cariglio of Ravenna, is ordained at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome by the Rev. James Hickman, rector of the North American College in Rome.
1945: Clarence Goodwin, an attendant at a gas station at 560 Mahoning Ave., shot a robber twice. The robber's gun misfired, so he attacked Goodwin with his fists and continued to strike him until he dropped dead of his gun wounds. Goodwin was treated for facial cuts and bruises.
Former Judge James E. Bennett is elected president of the Youngstown Chamber of Commerce, succeeding L.H. Beeghly.
The Rev. William J. Keefe, 48, pastor of St. Brendan Church, dies of cancer in St. Elizabeth Hospital. Just six weeks ago, he realized his dream with the installation of an altar of true liturgical design that could rank with any church of similar size.
