In a closely watched race across Trumbull County, Niki Frenchko took the commissioner's seat from incumbent Dan Polivka.

Republican Frenchko got 52 percent of the vote, while Polivka trailed with 47 percent of the vote.

Frenchko said she's excited to take office, saying that her win is a victory for "people over politics." She also added that her victory is particularly historic because she said Trumbull county has never had a commissioner of hispanic heritage.

This race was highly contested after Frenchko's residency was challenged in a recent lawsuit.

The suit named as defendants Frenchko and her boyfriend Joseph Szeman who lives in Mentor where Frenchko’s daughter attends school.

The Trumbull Board of Elections later ruled by unanimous vote that Frenchko was a qualified elector.
