Austintown PD arrests prison guard, former trooper
A former Ohio State Highway Patrol Trooper and current corrections officer who has faced legal trouble before has been arrested on a charge of domestic violence.
Jason Fantone, 44, was arrested Tuesday by Austintown police and booked into the county jail.
According to a police report, Fantone allegedly pushed his wife, threw a pumpkin at her face, and threatened her life at their home.
Fantone was arraigned via video and faces another court hearing on November 23.
Fantone is currently an officer at the Ohio State Penitentiary. An Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction spokesperson told 21 News an internal investigation will be conducted, and any administrative actions will be determined through that process.
In 2013, Fantone was arrested on a charge of drunk driving but pleaded guilty to the less serious charge of being in control of a vehicle while intoxicated.
A police officer found Fantone sleeping in a vehicle with the engine running at the Austintown Plaza. Fantone served three days in jail and had his driver's license suspended for six months.
Fantone had been reinstated to the patrol the previous year after being fired in 2011 for conduct unbecoming an officer after becoming belligerent with stadium security at a Cleveland Browns game and damaging a holding cell. A spokesperson for the Ohio State Highway Patrol confirmed Fantone was no longer working for them.
