U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos has honored West Boulevard Elementary School with the National Blue Ribbon School Award 2020. West as one of only 367 schools in the country to earn the prestigious honor, and one of the very few in the nation to have won the award twice.

West was first recognized as a National Blue Ribbon School in 2011.  According to the Blue Ribbon Program, five years must pass before a school can be nominated again.

“It’s exciting, even a bit overwhelming,” said West Boulevard Principal Al Cervello.

The school was nominated as an Exemplary High Performing School by the state of Ohio last spring.

“The Boardman School District  sets a high standard, and we are fortunate at West to have an incredible staff, enthusiastic students and very supportive parents.  This national honor requires everyone working together to achieve, and we are grateful,” said Cervello.

West Boulevard is among the schools honored as an Exemplary High Performing School.  Exemplary High Performing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools as measured by state assessments or nationally normed tests.

Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing Schools are among their state’s highest performing schools in closing achievement gaps between a school’s student groups and all students over the past five years.

A Virtual Awards Ceremony will be held on November 12 and 13.  The traditional Washington DC ceremony cannot take place this year, due to the pandemic.
