A Valley company that manufactures tear gas and other “less than lethal” weapons for law enforcement has been cited and fined for workplace violations during a fire that injured some employees.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration has issued a final order following an investigation into an explosion at Combined Systems near Jamestown in Mercer County, Pennsylvania.

Five employees were injured on February 14 when, according to OSHA, a worker was disposing explosive material into mineral oil when an electrostatic charge caused a flash fire to break out, causing a chain reaction of explosions.

OSHA, which says the employee, as well as other nearby workers who were were injured, cited Combined Systems for failing to ensure that proper precautions were in place to protect the employees from fire hazards.

Combined Systems has thirty days to pay a penalty of nearly $17,700 and show OSHA that the violations have been corrected.

21 News has reached out to Combined Systems for comment but has yet to receive a response.
