1995: Two years after his death, Youngstown businessman Ben Feldman is still being honored for his work in the insurance industry. The New York Life Insurance Co. dedicates the main auditorium in its Madison Avenue headquarters in New York to Feldman.
 
John Pankow and Leila Kenzie, cast members on the NBC-TV comedy "Mad About You" greet visitors to the WFMJ-TV tent at the Canfield Fair and sign autographs. 
 
Country music takes center stage at the Canfield Fair as Kix Brooks and Ronnie Dunn perform before a packed grandstand. 
 
1980: Mayor George  Vukovich and Youngstown City Council propose placing most city workers on a four-day workweek to save $400,000 and avoid the layoff of about 100 employees. Several union leaders say they'll challenge the plan in court.
 
Layoff benefits for steelworkers caught in the 1979-80 plant shutdowns of Youngstown Sheet & Tube Co. and U.S. Steel Corp. are being endangered as funds created to provide benefits are dwindling.
 
Bus drivers for the WRTA are divided over whether they can adequately provide transportation for thousands of Youngstown public and parochial school students. One, for instance, says that all that is needed is tweaking the schedule; another says the shortcomings are getting worse.
 
1970: Vandals half empty the Pemberton Park swimming pool and pour oil into the remaining water. The pool will not reopen for the Labor Day weekend. 
Twenty women graduate from the Hannah E. Mullins School of Practical Nursing in Salem.
 
Construction begins on a $1.3 million William A. Passavant Center at Thiel College.
 
Michael R. Antonoff is appointed manager of the Austintown Branch of Home Savings & Loan Association. 
 
1945: Mr. and Mrs. William J. Bryson of Youngstown receive a Silver Star awarded posthumously to their son, Pfc. William H. Bryson, who was killed in Germany April 16.
 
Five Youngstown men were on the USS Missouri when Japan surrendered to the United States: S 1/c Michael Antal, S c/2 John J. Duffy, Chief Petty Officer John Belcher, S c/2 Reno Ruscitti and S 1/c Kenneth K. Kopp. 
 
Two days of thoroughbred racing at the Canfield Fair attracted 25,000 people, proving, writes Vindicator Sports Editor Frank Ward, that the Mahoning Valley is fertile ground for racing.
