A former Jackson Milton teacher indicted for allegedly engaging in sexual conduct with a student was arraigned Tuesday.
28-year-old Sarah Barnes appeared in Mahoning County Court to answer sexual battery charges stemming from her time as a teacher in the Jackson Milton School District.
According to the indictment, Barnes allegedly engaged in sexual conduct with a student between December 2015 and June 2016. The indictment did not say the students age at the time of the alleged incidents.
Ohio law makes it illegal for teachers to have sex with any student, even if they are over 18.
Jackson Milton Superintendent Kirk Baker tells 21 News that he became aware of the allegations earlier this year when a former student complained about inappropriate text messages from Barnes.
Barnes was placed on paid administrative leave, but then resigned as the investigation was underway according to Baker.
State records show that Barnes was first licensed to teach in 2014.
Barnes is free on $2,000 bond and has a trial date set for October 13.
