Liquor bottles roll at Giant Eagle as Warren police wrestle suspected shoplifter

A police officer says he was assaulted by a man allegedly trying to shoplift three bottles of liquor from the Mahoning Avenue Giant Eagle in Warren.
The officer working security at the store Thursday night said he thought it was suspicious when he saw 41-year-old Alonza McCall wearing a heavy jacket during the hot and humid weather.
When the officer says he ordered McCall to stop when he spotted an object stuffed up McCall’s sleeve.
According to the police report, the officer grabbed McCall’s sleeve so he couldn’t run away, and also pulled out a bottle of vodka from McCall’s jacket.
The officer says during a struggle between the two, McCall punched him in the head and another bottle of liquor fell to the ground.
Moments later a third bottle fell to the floor according to the report.
Other officers arrived at the store and McCall, known to police as “Pee Wee”, was handcuffed.
Police say McCall's sister was in the store and was yelling at officers as they were trying to make the arrest.
Video posted on Facebook shows at least three people recording the arrest on cell phones.
The report says McCall fought police when they tried to put him in a cruiser and kicked an officer during the struggle.
Police confiscated a crack pipe and a box cutter after the arrest.
When McCall got to the Trumbull County Jail deputies found a Cleveland Indians shirt stuffed into his pants. Police say the shirt had been stolen from Giant Eagle.
Because McCall was placed into additional restraints during his arrest, a police sergeant was called in to investigate the case as a “use of force” incident.
McCall faces arraignment on charges of felonious assault, resisting arrest, robbery, and possession of drug paraphernalia.
