The final defendant in a scheme to defraud Medicaid of millions has been sentenced.

According to the release, 42-year-old Jennifer Sheridan of Braking Point Recovery Center was sentenced to 27 months in prison for her involvement in the scheme.

She was also ordered to pay $15,957,148 in restitution after pleading guilty to one count of health care fraud conspiracy.

Jennifer Sheridan is the ex-wife of Ryan Sheridan, former owner of Braking Point Recovery Center which operated in Austintown. He was sentenced in January to seven and a half years in prison and more than $24 million in restitution.

The scheme involved billing Medicaid for $48 million for drug and alcohol recovery services, with many of the services not being provided or were not medically necessary according to the Department of Justice.

The scheme occurred between January 2015 and October 2017. Braking Point submitted nearly 135,000 claims to Medicaid during that time, claiming more than $48.5 million in services that it allegedly provided.

Medicaid ended up paying Braking Point $31 million because of the claims.

During the time, Ryan Sheridan made purchases that included property in Columbiana, Mahoning and Trumbull Counties along with replicas of cars that were used in "Ghostbusters," "Batman," and "Back to the Future."

Medicaid suspended payments to Braking Point on October 18, 2017.

"This is the last defendant to receive their deserved sentence for fraudulent and deceptive criminal behavior," stated FBI Special Agent in Charge Eric Smith. "These individuals preyed on a healthcare system that is in place to help those in need and not to be used as an ATM to cipher millions of dollars from the taxpayers for their own pleasures."
