According to The Ohio State Highway Patrol, there were 3,915 drugged driving crashes in Ohio during 2019, which is why troopers are cracking down on violators.

Of the 1,041 fatal crashes in Ohio last year, 35 percent had at least one driver or pedestrian test positive for an illegal or prescription drugs. There were 5,215 citations handed out from troopers in 2019 to those suspected of driving under the influence of one or more drugs, according to OHSP.

Locally in 2019, there were 60 drugged-driving crashes in Mahoning County, 66 in Trumbull County, and 22 in Columbiana County. Ohio State Highway Patrol's District 4, where the Mahoning Valley resides, tallied a total of 325 drugged-driving related crashes. District 4 also includes Ashtabula, Portage, Geauga and Lake Counties.

"We take impaired driving seriously, and continue to be committed to promoting safety on Ohio's roadways through aggressive drugged driving enforcement," Colonel Richard S. Fambro, Patrol superintendent said. "It is inherently dangerous, and simply not worth the risk to get behind the wheel while impaired."
