Next summer, the city of Salem could have a designated area for people to drink purchased alcoholic beverages outside area businesses.

Mayor John Berlin told 21 News city council unanimously approved to send an application to the state of Ohio to request a Designated Outdoor Refreshment Area (DORA).

This is just the first step in a long process to get the application approved by the state, but the city has already come up with a whole safety plan, sanitation plan, and an idea where the DORA would be located.

Mayor Berlin said there is a 55-acre section of town that would fit the DORA requirements.

There would also be a fine for people who would leave the designated area with their drink.

It would include 11 businesses that could apply for permits to sell their liquor to those outside on the premise, as well as other businesses to help more people come to the city and experience the area.

Mayor Berlin said it could help the economy bounce back after the pandemic this year ruined many plans for this summer.

He said the income tax from the businesses forced to close due to the coronavirus helps them pave streets and pay for police and fire.

The DORA would be Thursday through Saturday, 12 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Mayor Berlin said council would work to schedule public hearings to see how the community feels about the idea as they wait to hear back from the state.

There is already DORA located in downtown Columbiana.
