Valley kids get creative with #museumchallenge using household items
1/6
A local museum that's been closed because of the coronavirus is showing off talent across the Valley without opening up its doors.
Back in April, the John J. McDonough Museum of Art, which is located on Wick Avenue in Youngstown, challenged residents of the region to tap into their imagination in the #museumchallenge.
Daily, the museum's social media flourished with creativity and innovation, from those interested in the fine arts while in quarantine using household items.
In the last month, the museum has received more than 200 entries that have included everything from pets to pizza boxes, as well as represented artworks ranging from famous portraits to abstract images.
Several participants came through local schools including Trumbull Career & Technical Center, Poland Schools, Saint Christine and Newton Falls High School.
Even some YSU Penguins such as Board of Trustee Chairman David C. Deibel and his wife have participated.
"We were so happy to participate in the McDonough Museum Challenge," said Deibel. "Dr. John J. McDonough inspired this wonderful gift to the University and as our community returns to some sort of normalcy, we hope that everyone will go visit the McDonough. In the meantime, my wife Holly and I are asking more people to participate in the challenge inspired by famous art work. Not only was it amusing, but we viewed artwork on-line we probably would never have seen. We're looking forward to going back to the McDonough more than ever now."
The challenge was inspired by the Getty Museum in California.
