The Ohio National Guard has now arrived at the Elkton Federal Prison after the numbers of inmates with COVID-19 spiked earlier this week.

A spokesperson with the National Guard said around 35 soldiers and airmen started arriving at the prison on Tuesday.

The national guard will be helping existing medical staff at the prison.

The spokesperson said they expect to be there for one to two weeks and this is a temporary assignment until federal support can be brought to the prison to help.

As of Wednesday three staff members and 10 inmates have tested positive for COVID-19.

Three inmates at the facility have also died.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine announced on Monday that he would be sending 26 members of the National Guard into Elkton, that number was increased due to the developing situation at the prison.
