YPD: Father, daughter killed in weekend double homicide
Bond is set at $2-Million for John Bruner, III, as he makes his initial appearance in court on Monday on two counts of Aggravated Murder.
Youngstown Police Detectives say the two people who died in a double shooting on Saturday afternoon were a father and a daughter.
Surrounded by Youngstown police and representatives from a local domestic violence shelter, Mayor Jamael Tito Brown spoke to news reporters about the deaths.
Not a lot of new information was released at the news conference with regard to the events that led up to the deaths of Cierra Morris, 25, and her father, Leroy Morris, 58.
YPD Chief of Detectives Brad Blackburn said Cierra Morris has a child with the man who is charged with the deaths, John Bruner, 30, but declined to elaborate on why Bruner was at the West Judson home where the shootings happened at around 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
Bruner, who is being held at the Mahoning County Jail, has no criminal history, according to prosecutors.
Captain Blackburn says Morris and Bruner were estranged and did not currently live together.
Detectives said they issued an arrest warrant through the law department for 30-year-old John Bruner III, who was officially arrested at the Youngstown Police Department.
Blackburn said Youngstown police notified Warren and Akron police that they were looking for Bruner and family members in Warren reached out to Bruner to convince him to turn himself in.
Representatives from Sojourner House spoke at the news conference to remind anyone who is in a domestic violence situation that they can provide help, stressing that Sojourner House offers shelter and emergency assistance by calling them at 330-747-4040 or on their website.
Brown said he held the news conference because he wants to send a message that violence can no longer be considered a part of the city's character.
"We cannot have the attitude 'that's just Youngstown,'" Brown said. "I want the message to be clear: Youngstown is not a place where you can go and commit crimes, and that's acceptable," he said.
City law director Jeff Limbian asked anyone with any information on what led to the shootings to come forward.
"Anyone who may have assisted in this matter could face some difficulty, so if you have details about what led up to this incident and the details of what happened after, we ask that you come forward," Limbian said.
