A driver crashed into a Poland Church Sunday afternoon, leaving a massive hole in the wall.

The accident happened around 1:30 p.m. at the Gospel Baptist Church on Clingan Road.

Officials say the woman went through a nearby stop sign and crashed into the church. She had to escape through the back of her car.

The cause is still under investigation, but she told officials she somehow kept going and was not sure if it was a brake issue or her floor mat got stuck on the gas pedal.

No one was inside at the time, and church services were done for the day, which could have made the situation a lot worse.

"I was just amazed and glad the building was empty, 'cause she was completely inside the Congress, completely inside the property," said Assistant Pastor Father Tom Hertzel.

Pictures from fire officials show debris inside the church with several pews knocked over.

They are boarding up the hole for now.

The driver was not hurt.

Insurance will be contacted to help pay for the damages to the driver's car and the church.
