Youngstown Fire Station 12, located on McGuffey Road will be temporarily closed for what the mayor and fire chief say are structural repairs.

Effective on Monday, Station 12 will temporarily close for safety reasons and move the firetruck housed there and personnel to Station 1.

According to a press release, Chief Finley notified Mayor Brown that the structural integrity of the floor of the fire station is potentially unsound to the point of being incapable of holding up a modern fire truck.

"While this matter has developed over a number of years, the recent exposure of additional rebar and the falling of additional cement from the underside of the station floor may be placing the men and women of Station 12 at serious risk," said Chief Barry Finley.

The fire station will remain closed for an expected 45 to 60 day period for repairs.

All firefighters will remain employed and can be housed at downtown Station 1.

Finley said the temporary closure would impact response times.

Some areas that are served by the station are "pretty far out there," said Finley.

The closest station to respond is Station 6, located on Oak Street, followed by the downtown station.

Finley said there is no cost estimate for repairs at this time.

"This is a temporary closure for a long term fix that should have occurred years ago," said Mayor Brown.
