Flames tore through a Trumbull County roller rink early Sunday morning that's been in the community for more than 50 years.

Multiple fire departments were called to Champion Skate on Mahoning Avenue around 1:30 a.m. for reports of a fire.

Once on scene, crews discovered flames inside and eventually shooting from the roof of the building.

Part of Mahoning Avenue between Clearview Drive and Champion Avenue had to be blocked off. At the same time, multiple departments from Champion, Bazetta, and Warren Township all worked to get the flames under control.

The state fire marshal was called in to investigate — no word yet on a possible cause of the fire.

Officials are expected to come back out Monday morning to investigate.

The rink was scheduled to host a New Year's Eve party on Tuesday. The skating rink says that those with any questions about events can call 330-759-4570.

Champion Skate was built in 1959 by Melvin Brainard and has been like a home to four generations of the family.

The owner's son, Jim Brainard, said, "My cousins and I lived here. I lived here. They had me on skates when I was eight months old. We played hockey here last Thursday. I'm still in shock. My kids are upset. There are so many memories here. The skating rink meant so much to so many people."
