1994: Coach Jim Tressel's Youngstown State University Penguins win their third NCAA Division I-AA national football championship in four years, defeating Boise State 28-14 at Marshall Stadium in Huntington, W.Va. 

Pennsylvania State Police say they have no firm leads six months after someone murdered Bonnie Lou Dryfuse, 34, her two daughters, Jacqueline, 7, and Heather, 4, and a niece, Stephanie, Herko, 5, is Dryfuse's mobile home in Pulaski Township.

Canfield City Manager Charles Tieche announces a $450,000 sprucing up of the Village Green, funded with state and city money. 

1979: Police and agents from the Ohio Attorney General's Office seized $32,000 and betting paraphernalia in a raid on a house on Hitchcock Road in Boardman. Two men were arrested. 

The Columbiana County Bar Association will seek federal funding for a legal aid program to provide counsel to the county's needy. 

Hubbard City Council approves a $3,400 increase in the mayor's salary, bringing it to $20,900, but Treasurer Dr. Thomas Crowe warns that escalating inflation will make that and other raises that were approved insufficient. 

1969: County Engineer J. Phillip Richley will hold a press conference at the Hotel Ohio to announce his candidacy for the Democratic nomination for the 19th Congressional District.

Youngstown City Council votes 4-3 to expand water service into Cornersburg Sewer District 14 southwest of the city.  Opposing were councilmen John Franken, Pete Starks and Emanuel Catsoules. 

The 103 babies born in November in Salem brought births for the year to 1,025, soaring beyond the 1968 year-end report of 997.  

1944: Mahoning County Republican leaders, who recall that as late as 1932 the county gave Herbert Hoover a 5,000 vote majority, are looking forward to no longer having Franklin Roosevelt at the head of the Democratic ticket and are hoping to make gains in 1946 and 1948 elections. 

Mrs. William Ambrose of Boardman, wife of the Mahoning County prosecutor, tells police that her purse containing $110 was cut from her arm while she was in a crowded E. Federal Street market. 

About 100 children of members of the Youngstown Police Department enjoy a Christmas party at the Fraternal Order of Police Hall on Hazel Street. Santa Claus had a gift for every child.
