21 News is learning more about the conditions of a mother and baby burned in a large house fire in a Struthers neighborhood.

It happened Friday afternoon around 4 p.m. at the intersection of Sexton Street and Dogwood.

An infant boy was taken in an ambulance to the hospital and was flown to Akron Children's Hospital in Akron.

Police said he is currently in the ICU with third-degree burns to more than 33 percent of his body and is expected to undergo surgery soon.

Struthers police said the mother does not speak fluent English and is of Portuguese descent.

Police said she is in stable condition.

An Ohio Edison employee told 21 News he was on the job in the area when he noticed smoke coming from the home. He then saw the mother in the garage and notified her that her house was on fire.

The woman panicked and went inside the home. After calling 911, the Ohio Edison employee then saw the woman come out of the other side of the house with the baby.

He said the baby's face was severely burned and was barely breathing.

A 911 caller said, "I don't think her baby is breathing."

21 News received more 911 calls with one saying, "It was smoking pretty good. She hysterically ran back into the house."

First responders immediately rushed the baby to the hospital.

Another bystander stepped in and took the mother to the hospital in her car.

"Her hands were burned, her hair was singed, and she did everything she needed to do to save her son," said Ashley Martinez, the woman who took the mother to the hospital in her own car. "She was just crying and saying Domingo, Domingo."

Along with the two victims, an engineer from the Struthers Fire Department was injured and taken to the hospital with a laceration to the hand.

That injury occurred while inside the home battling the blaze.

The Red Cross is helping the family.
