Mercy Health of Youngstown is tearing down a former church that is near the St. Elizabeth Youngstown campus.

The old St. Augustine Episcopal Church along Parmalee Avenue will be torn down after Mercy Health of Youngstown acquired the property.

Mercy Health officials say that the demolition of the old church will clearway for potential expansion of services at the St. Elizabeth Youngstown Campus.

After the church closed, religious officials worked together to decommission the establishment in 2017.

Mercy Health officials said this in a statement released Tuesday afternoon:

The Hospital understands the significance of any property and is grateful to have worked directly with community and religious leaders on helping to remove blight and further build a healthier neighborhood as well as Mahoning Valley.

No date has been set for the demolition of the building.
