State Troopers are investigating a deadly crash after a young child was struck and killed in Portage County Saturday.

The incident happened just before 12:30 p.m. on U.S. 224 just east of the Deerfield Circle.

Troopers say 26-year-old Melinda Ohler of Garfield Heights had parked her vehicle on the side of the road and was outside with her four-year-old child.

That child went into the roadway and was struck by a passing driver, 71-year-old Edward Kufleitner of Columbiana, according to troopers.

The boy was taken to the hospital where he later died.

Kufleitner was not injured in the crash and remained at the scene during the investigation.

The Deerfield Fire Department, Ohio Department of Transportation and the Portage County Sheriff’s Office assisted at the crash scene.

Impairment does not appear to be a contributing factor in the crash.

The crash remains under investigation by the Ohio State Highway Patrol.

There's no word yet if anyone will be charged.
