Millions of Americans will struggle to get to sleep and stay asleep tonight. The Centers for Disease Control says that one in three people don't get enough sleep.

But that lack of sleep could have lasting impacts on your health.

"If you don't sleep well, we know that you could have hypertension, we know that your blood pressure could be bad," said Drew Carchedi, the General Manager at Sleepy Hollow.

Ongoing sleep deficiency is linked to an increased risk of heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, stroke, and even mental health issues.

"One of the cornerstones of your wellness is sleep," said Carchedi.

For Bruce Berry, one of the owners of Sleepy Hollow, it's part of their mission.

"People come to us to get a better night's sleep, and a mattress is the most important thing to achieve that," Berry said. "There are differences. It's like a pair of shoes. Not every pair of shoes is going to be a good fit. And a good quality mattress really makes a difference in a good night's sleep."

"We do a sleep assessment, and that sleep assessment really addresses some of the health concerns our consumers might have," Carchedi explained.

Some of those health needs are easier to find solutions for, with products like adjustable bases.

"So just raising him up that little bit took ten to 15 pounds of pressure off his chest. Makes breathing easier, helps with acid reflux, if you snore a little bit it helps with that. If you snore a lot and have sleep apnea, like me, you still have to wear your CPAP," said retail sleep associate Phil Kilbourne. "And then if you raise the feet a little bit, it will help with circulation."

But from there, finding the right mattress can be tricky and will ultimately vary from person to person.

"Because we're all shaped differently, all shapes and sizes, there is a mattress for everybody's sleep needs," said Carchedi.

"Side sleeper, back sleeper, stomach sleeper," Carchedi said. "It is critical to match the mattress to how you sleep. One of the most important things is your comfort and support. If you're not comfortable and you do a lot of tossing and turning throughout the night, that adds a lot of stress to your pressure points and your spine, the way you're shaped. So there are better mattresses that are geared toward side sleepers, back sleepers, stomach sleepers."

"You know you often hear about those pillowtop mattresses; those are generally good for a back sleeper. Somebody who wants a softer surface to sleep on," he said.

And that's where the debate of firmness and softness often comes in to question.

"Just because a mattress is firm doesn't mean it's going to give you good support," Carchedi explained. "Firmness doesn't always equal support. I think we're a little remiss sometimes when we hear somebody say you have to have a firm mattress to get good support. Really what firm and soft are about are more styles of comfort."

SIde sleepers typically want more softness to cradle their hips and shoulders which protrude. Stomach sleepers may want to opt for a firmer mattress with a plush top, which provides support for the lumbar, but allows for some extra cushion.

"As we get older, we need that. Especially a lot of older women say, 'Oh, I've got arthritis. How do I take care of this?', and they think they need a firm bed. I put them on a firm bed, that's what they want, and, 'Oooh it hurts.' Because I have them roll on to their side, then I get them to the bed that they really need," said retail sleep associate Cindy Ciprich.

She said that for women, specifically, choosing the right mattress can come in handy.

"Specifically for some of the ladies who have a bit more on top, support is important," she said. She recommended an adjustable bed raised just a few inches to provide relief from the added weight.

For women who might be going through menopause, she suggests a mattress that might have a cooling interior to ventilate some of the extra heat away.

Carchedi also said that keeping up to date on your mattress is critical- since the typical life span of a mattress is eight to ten years.

Recent trends have more and more people turning to online retailers to purchase a mattress, but Ciprich warns against it.

"We have people come in a couple of times, come in in their pajamas, and test them out," she said.

For many, that's the only way to find the mattress that's not only what you want, but also what your body needs.

If it seems like a lot to take into consideration, that's because it can be.

Carchedi said that sometimes it can be daunting to know how to choose the right mattress for you in what he calls a "sea of white rectangles."

But that's why Kilbourne said he watches the customer's face.

"When they lay down, and you see their face relax, you know you've found a good one," he said.

For Sleepy Hollow, they hope that the next time you hear their slogan "How Did You Sleep Last Night?" the answer will be "Good."
