The Cafaro family donated $1.5 million to make this happen - part of the largest fundraising campaign in YSU history.
It's another product of YSU's growing enrollment, and a sure sign of its growing downtown footprint.
Monday, the Cafaro family and university officials broke ground on the $2.5 million dollar Cafaro Family Field - right across from the Cafaro House dorms.
Students will be able to use the space for all kinds of intramural activities including soccer, lacrosse and Frisbee.
"We've moved, I think, from about seven club sports to over 20. We found the need to have more field space," says YSU president Jim Tressel. "So with all that being said, the next step was to create another field for activity."
For those directly benefiting from such a big investment, it'll go a long way toward getting a leg up on the competition.
"That means for us, for a growing program, more practice time, more time to recruit, more recruitment events, stuff like that," says YSU soccer team president Luke Leonard.
"They do attract in wonderful student athletes from outside this area and across the country and it's going to be a benefit for our local high schools which is exciting," added YSU trustee Capri Cafaro.
Cafaro also says the facility will help YSU play an integral role in the development of downtown.
The gift falls under the campus beautification and facilities portion of the 100 million dollar "We See Tomorrow" fundraising campaign - the biggest in YSU history.
But even that staggering figure isn't one Tressel is willing to settle for.
"We're right around the $90 million mark right now and hopefully within a year we'll be able to say we reached $100 million and who knows, maybe we'll up the goal."
YSU officials tell 21 News they expect to finish this entire project and have it open in time for the start of the Fall semester in August.
