Mysterious loud "boom" reported in Liberty

The sound of a loud explosion reported in Liberty remains a mystery.

It was about 2:30 Friday when calls to 911 reported what one caller described as sounding like a "bomb" going off.

"You could feel it like a shock wave," said the caller. "It knocked me out of bed."

The call came from the Vintage Village Estates Mobile Home Park just off Belmont Avenue, and the caller wasn't the only one who heard the noise.

"It was pretty loud. I mean, I was sitting in my vehicle with the windows up, and I heard it, and I couldn't tell where it was coming from," said Sherri Lucas.

And just about a mile down the road, fire crews at the Liberty Fire Station also heard the loud boom and said they felt it too.

"It actually shook the station," said Captain Cathy Macchione. "My partner went out and looked up and down Belmont because we thought maybe it was a semi that blew a tire, and we didn't see anything."

One caller thought the loud explosion might have come from a nearby gas well, but crews checked the area and said everything appeared normal.

We asked if it could have been an exploding rifle target. "I know what Tannerite sounds like, and I don't think it was that at all," said Macchione.

"I honestly believe it was probably a semi-truck tire, and especially since we found nothing," said Macchione. "I think they just got the truck to the yard or pulled off somewhere where we didn't find them, and that was it, but it was very loud."
