A trio accused in a Boardman wallet snatching incident is in bigger trouble after allegedly giving police officers fake I.D. cards from Puerto Rico.

Boardman police arrested 45-year-old Margarito Maldonado, 30-year-old Asaias Contreras, and 38-year-old Patricio Valenzuela on Thursday after an incident that started at Marshalls in Boardman.

According to a police report, a woman was shopping in Marshall's, stepped away from her cart to look at something, and was promptly told by an employee that Valenzuela had just taken her wallet.

The report says the victim and the Marshall's employee approached Valenzuela and Maldonado, who was standing next to him, to ask about the stolen wallet.

The victim reportedly told officers that Maldonado then pointed out her wallet on the shelf and then ran from the store.

A report says the victim checked her wallet and found $50 in cash was missing.

The victim and the employee reportedly followed Maldonado and Valenzuela outside and sow them get into a blue Kia driven by a third suspect, later identified as Contreras.

The police report says investigators stopped the car a short while later on Interstate 680.

Officers say the suspects gave police Puerto Rican identification cards. Once officers got the trio back to the police station, officers say they found out all three of the ID cards were fake.

Maldonado, Contreras, and Valenzuela reportedly told officers that they did not understand English, so investigators called in an officer who could translate for them.

Officers say during the course of the investigation, they searched the car the trio had been discovered in and found two brand new, "in the box" laptop computers, as well as cash.

Maldonado and Valenzuela are facing charges of theft and forgery, meanwhile, Contreras has been charged with forgery and complicity.

The trio is due back in court on January 29th.
