An educational aide at a McDonald school and former officer of a parent's organization was arraigned Thursday on a charge of forgery.

Tammy L. Candel, 47, of McDonald was booked into the Trumbull County jail on Wednesday, where she was held until her video arraignment the following day in Niles Municipal Court.

McDonald Police Lt. Ryan Ronghi says Candel forged the signature of the Secretary of the McDonald Schools Parent Educator Group back in March 2016.

Ronghi says Candel, who was President of the organization at the time, forged the name on a check written to herself.

The check was to reimburse Candel for her expenses which were due to her, but forging the signature of the group's secretary was illegal, according to Lt. Ronghi.

Police discovered the alleged crime while investigating another officer of the parent's group, Stephanie Hilbun who allegedly stole money from the organization.

Hilbun has since been indicted.

McDonald School Superintendent Kevin O'Connell tells 21 News that Candel has been placed on administrative leave from her job as an educational aide at Roosevelt Elementary School as the school cooperates with law enforcement's investigation.

Candel has been an aide since 2013.
