Former NFL quarterback Mike Tomczak played 14 seasons at the highest level, has a Super Bowl ring and now is in his second season as a volunteer coach with the Youngstown State Football team.

"I got to the point in my life, got directed this way and I relied on Coach Tressel with some counsel," said Tomczak who played at Ohio State when Tressel was an assistant coach.

"I explored some other opportunities, but this was the best fit for my schedule and is allowing me to build relationships in the coaching world," said Tomczak.

He won a Super Bowl with Chicago and was part of their legendary "Super Bowl Shuffle" in 1985. Tomczak also played with the Packers, Browns, and Steelers before winding up his career.

Many of today's players weren't around when Tomczak played, but he has a daily reminder, a Super Bowl ring. "I wear it once in a while to remind them I do have a history in the NFL, but they'll have to Google it to watch some of the highlights."

Despite being a quarterback, Tomczak is working with the defense in his volunteer role. "I stay away from the quarterbacks and watch them from afar. They have Coach (Joe) Ganz and Coach (Brian) Crist doing their thing," said Tomczak.

Tomczak, an Illinois native is thankful for his chance to around Coach Bo Pelini and the Penguin football program. "I'm passionate about it and I've adapted to the Youngstown culture."

The former QB admits he'd love to get into coaching full time, but would have to be the best situation. "Personally, for me, I coach every day. I coach life, I coach love, I coach kindness and if I have a skill where I can help a player become better, I'm embracing it and the whole culture."
