A historic event attracted a crowd to the Mahoning County courthouse on Tuesday.  It was the long-anticipated return of the re-furbished courthouse statues.

In 2015 the statues were removed from the top of the courthouse because the pedestal holding them was deteriorating, creating a safety issue.

"It had caused the statues to collapse a little bit into the base, so we were required to put in a new structure very similar to what they did to the Statue of Liberty, " said Historic Architect, Elizabeth Murphy.

While the 2,000-pound statues appear to be solid, they are hollow.

The restorers cleaned away decades of air pollution and restored the color of oxidized copper.

The figures, who Murphy said are female, represent "Justice, Strength and Authority and Law."

After more than a year of restoration, the 108-year-old statues are now back where they belong.
