Brookfield Township Trustees have fired a police officer accused of chasing a suspected impaired driver over the state line on an unlicensed all-terrain vehicle, then lying about the incident.

Terry Gigax did not attend his public hearing held on Wednesday where trustees say they found enough evidence to terminate the 42-year-old Masury man from his position with the police department.

According to a report from the Trumbull County Sheriff's department, Gigax said his ATV was struck by another vehicle and forced into a ditch along Sharon Hogue Road on July 25.

Gigax, who was off duty at the time, chased the suspect vehicle on his ATV from Brookfield into Sharon, Pa., and back into Brookfield.

The suspect was eventually arrested by police along Custer-Orangeville Road.

Duane Banjak, who was cited for OVI, told a Sheriff's Deputy that Gigax used his fist to smash the windshield of his car after the chase.

According to records, Officer Gigax was deemed to be insubordinate for failing to show up for a polygraph test to verify his side of the incident.

For that reason, and because Gigax operated the ATV without proper registration, damaged the windshield of Banjak's Ford, pursued Banjak into Pennsylvania while off duty, and then didn't tell the whole truth about the incident, trustees voted to fire Gigax.
