Officials from the Ohio Department of Transportation say they have completed repairs on a portion of Interstate 80's eastbound lanes damaged when a gasoline tank truck crashed and caught fire early Thursday.

The road was reopened shortly before 4 p.m.

State Troopers say the tanker truck carrying 8,000 gallons of gasoline went off the road, rolled over and caught fire in the eastbound lanes of I-80 just past the Belmont Avenue interchange. The truck was engulfed in flames and smoke.

Two other vehicles also caught fire after stopping to help the driver of the tanker. All three vehicles were destroyed.

First responders from surrounding communities were called out as well as hazmat crews.

Firefighters used a fire retardant foam to extinguish the blaze.

Due to smoke inhalation concerns, the interstate was evacuated.  Approximately 100 people were removed from the road while crews worked to control the fire.

ODOT temporarily closed I-80 westbound and State Route 11 southbound lanes after the initial fire, and then had to close the roads again temporarily after the wreckage re-ignited. Both are open now.

Hazmat officials say a small amount of fuel seeped into an local stream. A small earthen dam has been built to keep more gasoline from leaking.

Troopers say the driver of the tanker, Mark Cosgrove, 48, of Masury was treated for minor injuries at Sharon Regional Hospital, then released.
