Some city of Niles employees returned to their offices Wednesday after mold issues closed city hall Monday.

At least two employees stayed home after reporting headaches and coughing and Niles Mayor Tom Scarnecchia said he wasn't feeling well either.

The cleanup is well underway in city hall and is forcing many employees to work in other offices or move to a new location.

Employees from the tax office, auditor's office and other employees facing a health risk will now be working out of the Niles Wellness Center.

The building was inspected on Tuesday and now city officials must determine how to make repairs and at what cost.

An engineer says cracks near bricks, and problem spots on the roof could be to blame for the leaks.

The city service director says they routinely patch problem spots on the roof, but now they'll have to find a more permanent solution to stop the leaks.

"The city is doing everything they can. The workers are wiping down all the walls. They have places cordoned off that are considered unsafe. I think the administration is doing a good job. They're addressing an issue and are trying to accommodate the employees," said Bo Marchionte, President of AFSCME Local 506 Council 8.

Marchionte added that he believes most offices will be fully functioning soon.
