Another State Trooper in Northeast Ohio has been injured after a routine traffic stop turned into a three car crash.

According to a news release from the Chardon Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash involved three vehicles and an Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant on State Route 322 east of Auburn Road in Geauga County shortly before 11 a.m. Friday.

Troopers say Sergeant Jim Smith, age 52, of the Chardon post was on a traffic stop on Route 322.

Smith was outside his patrol car talking to April Schill, age 35 of Newbury, who he had stopped for a traffic violation.

As Smith was talking to Schill, James Martin, age 80, of Highland Heights, Ohio ran his vehicle into the rear of the patrol car, pushing it into Schill’s car, and then striking Smith, throwing him into the ditch.

The patrol car had the overhead emergency lights activated at the time.

Both Smith and Schill were injured. Sergeant Smith was transported to Hillcrest Hospital and Schill was taken to University Hospital in Chardon.

Both were treated and released. Martin had minor injuries.

All three vehicles received heavy damage.

The patrol car and Schill's Honda Accord both received heavy damage.

No charges have been filed and the crash remains under investigation.

Earlier this month, Trooper Ken Robbins of the Canfield Post of the Highway Patrol received minor injuries when he was out on a traffic stop along I-80 in Jackson Township.

Robbins narrowly escaped serious injury as he pushed a tow truck driver out of harm's way when a truck pushed his cruiser into the highway's concrete divider.

The Patrol reminds drivers that Ohio has a law requiring motorists to move over a lane or slow down when emergency vehicles are parked on the side of the road.
