PA Turnpike to announce higher speed limit

Drivers will be getting to their destinations in a shorter amount of time on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and other interstates this summer.
This afternoon, Pennsylvania Turnpike CEO Mark Compton and PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards will announce an expansion of the 70 mph speed limit zones.
The changes are being made after both agencies studied engineering and safety issues.
Both agencies had 70 mph pilot areas on 97 miles of turnpike and 104 miles of interstates that began in August 2014.
The limit is already 70 between the Blue Mountain and Morgantown interchanges in south-central Pennsylvania as part of a pilot program.
Under the new plan, stretches of road that are currently 65 miles per hour will increase to 70.
Areas now posted at 55 miles an hour will remain at 55. Those areas include, work zones, tunnels, mainline toll plazas like Gateway and Warrendale, as well as the Eastern slope of the Allegheny mountain.
The commission hopes the change will conversion will provide more consistency for Turnpike drivers.
