A sixteen-year-old boy is in the Mercer County Jail unable to post a $250,000 bond set after being charged as an adult in connection with a weekend shooting at a house party.
Police Chief Gerald Smith says Zaire Tamir Hasan was picked up Sunday afternoon on a warrant issued for his arrest.
According to police, officers were called to a reported shooting shortly after 11 p.m. Saturday to a residence on the 500 block of McClure Avenue where between 30 and 50 young people were attending a party.
When police arrived, they found an 18-year-old Farrell man who had been shot in the chest.
Police say the bullet exited through the victim’s back.
Authorities have not released the name or condition of the victim, who was taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital in Youngstown for medical treatment.
Hasan was arraigned before a district magistrate Sunday on charges of attempted criminal homicide, two counts of aggravated assault, discharging a firearm into an occupied structure, possession of a firearm by a minor, and recklessly endangering another person.
Chief Smith Hasan is charged as an adult in this case because murder is one of several charges in Pennsylvania that require juveniles to be charged in adult courts.
Smith says Sharon Detectives worked through the night locating and interviewing dozens of witnesses.
The Chief says that because of this shooting and what he says is ongoing violence in the nation, he has called upon the assistance of the Shenango Valley Ministerium for help organizing neighborhood meetings in the near future.
“Our shared goal is to curb the violence among our youth, educate the public about what to do if they witness a crime of violence, and to coordinate some neighborhood watches,” said Smith in a statement.
Hasan's next hearing before a magistrate is March 23.
