No anesthesia. No knives. Just 15 minutes of your time and a few injections is all it takes for Kybella to start melting away a double chin. The new FDA approved injectable is the first and only treatment of its kind on the market.
"Well over half of my cosmetic patients who com in wanting to improve their appearance, specifically don't like the appearance of their neck and that fat deposit," said plastic surgeon Dr. Adam Cash.
Dr. Cash says those fat deposit can be the result of genetics, diet and exercise or age. For some people, treatment is the only option to get rid of a double chin.
For Kybella injections to work, doctors place a temporary tattoo under a patient's chin. The tattoo acts as a guide for the doctors to inject Kybella, which is a material almost identical to an acid the body produces that breaks down fat. Kybella is injected into the fat, just beneath the chin, destroying fat cells in the process.
"Almost instantly the fat cells burst and that fat containing material goes in between the cells, goes in the blood stream and is processed like you were working out. It all happens very quickly," said Dr. Cash.
For now, the injections are only FDA approved for the chin area. Most patients experience visible results after two to four treatments, but may require as many as six treatments.
