The Columbiana County Sheriff's Department is investigating an alleged home invasion that ended with one person dead in Minerva.

Officials say around 7:00 a.m. police were called out the 22000 block of Virginia Avenue for reports of a home invasion.

According to Sheriff Raymond Stone, the suspected perpetrator, 33-year-old Ryan P. Johns of Canton, attempted to enter a home and was shot by the homeowner, 63-year-old William Dietrick Jr.

Police say Johns was shot in the chest then ran from the house and collapsed in a neighbors yard. He was transported to Alliance Community Hospital where the suspect was pronounced dead.

The Columbiana County Sheriff's Office and the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigations were on scene for much of the day collecting evidence.

The shooting continues to be under investigation, and an autopsy will be conducted.

Neighbors who live in Walker Allotments say their neighborhood is typically peaceful and has been that way for years. Now they intend to lock door, and secure their windows.
