Additional school resource officers were on hand Thursday morning at Warren G. Harding High School following a fight that took place outside the school on Wednesday.
Superintendent Steve Chiaro told 21 News that the extra precautions were taken after cell phone video of the fight posted on Facebook elicited what Chiaro described as a lot of misinformation.
Chiaro admitted that the fight was serious. School staff and a resource officer were called out to break up the fight, which occurred as students were boarding buses.
It's not known what started the fight in the first place, but students found to be involved will face disciplinary actions. School resource officers and Harding's principal are investigating the incident and plan to review surveillance videos.
"I am strongly encouraging them to suspend the students involved in the fight and any students that contributed to the situation," said Steve Chiaro, Superintendent of Warren City Schools.
Chiaro said expulsions and charges could also be imposed.
In addition to having the district's four school resource officers on hand, high school students were asked to go through security checkpoints before going to class.
"We wanted to send a message that our schools, especially the high school, is about school security and that our kids need to be educated in a safe environment," Chiaro said.
He said that parents have been contacted to explain what happened and to assure them that their child is safe in school.
To keep accurate information flowing, an "all call" message was sent out parents at lunch time Thursday to all parents clarifying that no weapons were involved in the fight, the school was never on lockdown and that this type of violence will not be tolerated.
