Privately operated prison in Youngstown scene of disturbance
The Northeast Ohio Correctional Center remained on lock down Tuesday evening after a disturbance earlier in the day.
NEOCC spokesperson Candace Rivera issued a statement saying that after a group of inmates on the smaller recreation yard refused orders to return to their cells at the Hubbard Road lockup.
Statement says that all staff and inmates are accounted for and facility management is communicating with the inmates to resolve the matter peacefully.
Rivera says there have been no incidents of violence, adding that, "The facility is secured and the community is not in danger."
Rivera calls the lock down precautionary.
The privately owned prison houses about 1,500 federal inmates. Operators of the facility are seeking to renew a contract for those inmates to prevent their transfer to a prison out of state, which could result in the elimination of about 400 jobs.
