A search in Lawrence County ended in tragedy, as a teen drowned in a popular swimming area.

Rescue crews recovered the body of 17-year-old John Wayne Durnell from Slippery Rock Creek near Frew Mill Road Sunday evening.

Police say the boy, who was with swimming with a friend at Kennedy's Mills, tried to swim across the creek and drowned after getting caught in the strong current.

State police and the county coroner are investigating.
